Interview with Vyshnavi Chunduru, Tech Team Lead

Vyshnavi is a fifth year computer science major at Northeastern University. She was on the HackBeanpot 2018 core team and is back this year as the Tech Team Lead for HackBeanpot 2020! In her free time, when she’s not coordinating all-things-tech, you can find her at dance workout classes, going for walks, or listening to music!

What does the Tech Team do?

The overall goal of the Tech team is to create tools to ease the process of attending the hackathon. This year, the tech team is working on a variety of exciting projects to help make communication with attendees and sponsors as smooth as possible! These projects include maintaining an informative website that will encourage people to attend and sponsor our event, as well as building an application portal to help with the application process. There is a lot of independence and flexibility on the tech team; the work is divided so that people have the freedom to work on projects that they want! We chose this approach because we wanted to give people the chance to learn as much as they can working on the tech tools they want.

Tell us about Tech’s work for HackBeanpot 2019.

Up until HackBeanpot 2020, the Tech team was actually called the Web team. This means that the team was working solely on creating the https://hackbeanpot.com website. Last year, the Web team completely redid the website using React. It was also redesigned to fit with HackBeanpot’s new branding that came out in 2019. The redesign involved a lot of collaboration with the team design to make sure the website aligned the new branding.

The new and improved HackBeanpot website!

What is Tech’s vision for HackBeanpot 2020?

With our name change from the Web team to the Tech team, we want to try and focus on building more tools that improve the hackathon experience for everyone involved! This goes hand in hand with HackBeanpot’s mission — making the hackathon experience better — and we get to help create the tools to do that 💻. As mentioned before, one of our big tools this year is an application portal to help ease the application process for attendees and organizers. We want to expand the tools we already have and create new ones to make HackBeanpot 2020 even better! 😁

What is your favorite part of the Tech team?

My favorite part of the Tech team is that we have the possibility to create so many different things. Everyone comes from different backgrounds, and so everyone has their own strengths and it’s cool to see how people use that in their projects! Changing from the Web team to the Tech team means we have no limits — it gives us the freedom to see a problem and figure out how to fix it with technology.

Stay tuned for more announcements about great new tools from the Tech team coming your way for HackBeanpot 2020! ;D
